Nagi Panchhi Sanctuary is situated in the Jhajha district of south Bihar near the border of Jharkhand. It was declared a Panchhi sanctuary on 25 February 1984 as per Section 18 of the Vanjiv (Protection) Adhiniyam 1972. The final notification was issued on 4 September 2009 under Section 26A of the Adhiniyam. Thousands of migrants gather in the Panchhi sanctuary, especially during the winter season from October to March.

The area of ​​the sanctuary is 2.1 square km. It is home to more than 170 species of birds. In 2004, the Naga Daim Panchi Sanctuary was declared a Matapur Panchi Area (IEBA) by Birdlife International.

This treaty was signed on behalf of various countries for environmental protection in the convention held in Ramsar City Iran. Since this happened in the city of Ramsar, such marked wetlands are also called Ramsar sites.

170 species of birds come here

Birds of 170 species come here. Around 170 species of birds from India and abroad come to Nagi Sanctuary in winter. The forest department has taken the initiative to provide a safe environment and food to the birds. A forest area has been developed here. Apart from making nests on trees, arrangements have also been made for food for the birds. There is a bird awareness centre in the sanctuary. Rosy Starling and Northern Lapwing have been seen here, which have come from South Bengal and Europe. Apart from this, the rare bird Indian Skimmer has also returned from China. Many other rare birds are also seen here occasionally.

Bird watching can be done from the three watchtowers

There are three watch towers in Nagi. The chirping of birds can be seen from these towers. Apart from this, six boats are available for boating. You can enjoy boating by paying a nominal fee. There are three types of binoculars available here, which interested people can obtain and use after getting permission from the sanctuary administration.

When was the Nagee Dam constructed?

 The construction of the dam was started for irrigation purposes in 1955 and 1956 under the first five-year plan after the recommendation of the planning commission. It was completed in 1958 under the second five-year plan. The cost of this project was ₹3 crore (₹30,000,000). Nagee dam was constructed for irrigation of approximately 9850 acres of land. As a result of the construction of Nagee Dam, during the rainy season, water gets collected in sufficient quantities in the ponds, which is later used for irrigation through the canals flowing below. Many species of fish, predators, birds, snakes etc. are found in the ponds.

Migratory birds were seen in the sanctuary: Eurasian Marsh Harrier, Greater Short-toed Lark, Mallard, Common Tern, Western Yellow Wagtail, Olive-backed Pipit, Richard’s Pipit, Blue Rock Thrush, Common Snipe, Blyth’s Reed Warbler, Falcated Duck, Kentish Plover, Steppe Eagle, Eurasian Wigeon, Common Pochard, Greylag Goose, Tufted Duck, Northern Pintail, Ferruginous Duck, Gadwall, Bar-headed Goose, Red-crested Pochard, Northern Shoveler, Ruddy Shelduck, Black-necked Stork, Jacobin Cuckoo, Common Kestrel, Barn Swallow, Brown Shrike, Brown-headed Gull, Citrine Wagtail, White Wagtail, Black Redstart, Red-breasted Flycatcher, Osprey, Great Crested Grebe, Eurasian Coot, Little Ringed Plover, Common Sandpiper, Little Stint, Temminck’s Stint, Common Greenshank, Wood Sandpiper and Green Sandpiper. The reason for the arrival of these migratory birds is the expansion of the wetland and the growth of aquatic plants, plankton and molluscs in the wetland. These wetland plants are the food of these birds. Birds eat them and there are also fish in the wetland.
